Thousands of families from Greenford Quay’s West London community came together over the summer to enjoy a jam-packed calendar of free events. The Summer Series – now in its third year – was an opportunity for residents and neighbours of all ages to enjoy an incredible line up of live music, street food, movie screenings and kids’ activities, all courtesy of Greenford Quay rental apartments.
Eats & Beats
The fun kicked off in May with our first sunset market, to a soundtrack of music from DJ Dom Booth, Chaddy Sax and radio host DJ Sassy B. Held every first Friday of the month throughout the summer, attendees danced the night away by the water while enjoying delicious street food, cocktails and games.
Street Food Saturdays
Keeping the mouth-watering food and drinks flowing, our monthly Street Food Saturdays were bigger than ever this year. For 2024, we partnered with T&T Markets, talented artists and local businesses to create a vibrant weekend market for all the family. Complete with fete-style games, roving entertainment – from magicians to bubble entertainers – and face painting, these monthly events were a highlight of the summer.
Movie bonanza
Film buffs basked in the magic of cinema at our open-air canal-side amphitheatre for this year’s summer screenings. Sponsored by The Lock and Fringe Cinema, movie-goers were treated to a varied programme of blockbusters and family favourites, from Kung Fu Panda to Barbie. They could also cheer on Team GB and the world’s best athletes with special coverage of the Paris Olympics shown between films. Blankets, and complimentary popcorn and sweets helped complete the ultimate viewing experience.
“This was wonderful for all of us residing in Greenford! It’s a perfect trip out with kids in summer holiday but I saw people of every age coming together to watch summer films - lovely!” - A Summer Screenings Attendee.
After the success of last year’s event, Fringe Cinema returned to Greenford Quay’s Lyons Dock private screening room for a specially-curated programme of cult classics and international films. Lucky attendees received a welcome drink and movie night treat box as they relaxed in comfy chairs to enjoy films like Amelie and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
Canal Festival
Back for its third outing, this year’s Canal Festival partnered with Hanwell Hootie music festival to bring the ultimate line up of live music to more than 1,000 people over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Friends and family enjoyed an epic day of summer festival vibes, with music from the main stage, circus workshops and entertainment, a sustainable kids’ craft den from eco hub Sunny Jar, boat trips down the canal and giant garden games.
There were plenty of places for people to refuel too at the Street Food Village, offering a range of food and drinks stalls, as well as independent real ales and ciders, organic wines and soft drinks from the Dodo Micro Pub.
“The music was amazing, all the acts where first rate. I also really enjoyed the street performers wondering about and interacting with people! The food was great and loved the boat trips.” – A canal Festival Attendee
Self Love Supper Club
A new addition for this year’s summer series, the Self Love Supper Club invited women to an unforgettable evening of nourishing food and connection. Held at The Glassworks, the event was an opportunity for attendees to explore tools for self-care, share experiences and make new friends – all over a three-course meal and drinks.
Founder Charlotte Black said: “Whether arriving solo or with friends, everyone left with a sense of community and newfound friendships. It was a night dedicated to uplifting each other and embracing the best versions of ourselves. We are so grateful to all who joined us and look forward to continuing this beautiful journey of self-love together.”
All proceeds to the ticketed event went to the wellbeing charity The Mindfulness Project.
Celebrating nature
Throughout the Summer Series, Greenford Quay residents and visitors could also enjoy the Vibrancy of Nature GQ Glow art trail. Inspired by themes of community and nature, the colourful display featured neon-dressed model birds dotted in trees and on structures across Greenford Quay – from Grenan Square to Oldfield Lane.
Visitors marvelled at the striking collection of both indigenous and exotic birds, from a crow, heron and magpie, to macaw, toucan and woodpecker. The GQ Glow installation was not only a visual spectacle but also a celebration of the vibrant community spirit that makes Greenford Quay truly special.
