We celebrate sustainability for Earth Day 2024!
Today, communities all over the world are coming together to celebrate this year’s Earth Day. This annual event is a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet through environmental conservation and sustainability.
Our rental apartments in West London are designed and built with the environment in mind, helping our residents to live sustainably every day.
Reuse and recycle
This year’s Earth Day is focusing on its commitment to reducing plastic production by 60% by 2040. Earth Day President Kathleen Rogers said: “The Plant vs. Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet.”
At Greenford Quay, we take recycling very seriously. We have dedicated recycle refuse chutes on every floor. From here they are collected by Ealing Council to be separated and recycled. Our Traid clothes recycling bins also give residents the chance to give away any items they no longer want, to be sorted and sold second-hand at its charity shops all over London.
Renewable energy
Replacing fossil fuels with green energy is a vital way to cut the harmful CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. So far, 1,200sqm of solar panels have been installed across Greenford Quay, producing renewable energy and saving residents money on their electricity bills. Our green roofs are also enhancing the living environment, helping to improve air quality and boost biodiversity.
Meanwhile, our onsite energy centre — including two gas-powered engines — is generating electricity and hot water for our residents, reducing our overall carbon footprint.
Quality landscaping
We all understand the importance of being surrounded by greenery – for both our physical health and our mental wellbeing. Recent research by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council, found that living with a regular view of a green space provides health benefits worth £300 per person every year.
Our generous green spaces, landscaped with flowers and trees, not only provide a home to flourishing wildlife, but give residents space to exercise, socialise and relax.
Green construction
By using modular construction techniques to build our apartments, we have reduced noise pollution and construction traffic and waste by up to 80%, whilst keeping our local environment clean and comfortable for our neighbours. The method of building ‘modules’ off-site using efficient manufacturing processes also significantly reduces materials waste. During construction we re-used 100,000m3 of our onsite waste.
Energy efficient
All our rental apartments across Tillermans, Lyons Dock and The Glassworks are equipped with top-of-the range energy efficient SMEG appliances to make cooking – and even tidying up — a breeze. These not only help to save energy and lower greenhouse gas emissions, they also keep household bills under control.
On top of that, our homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Rating of ‘B’ and above, thanks to high-quality floor-to-ceiling windows, good insulation and advanced ventilation. So residents can live comfortably while doing their bit to protect the planet.
Eco-friendly travel
A Government report, published in March, showed London’s air quality has improved dramatically since 2016. This was mainly driven by an increase in electric buses and taxis across the capital, together with the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in 2019.
Residents at Greenford Quay can get involved too, with a host of eco-friendly travel options available on their doorstep. Anyone taking the bus or train can collect public transport credits. While those who prefer pedal power can take advantage of onsite Brompton bike hire or our dedicated secure bike storage, powered by energy efficient sensor lights.
